Canberra has more public open space per resident than any other Australian capital — by design. Lake Burley Griffin's full lap is 28km, with a 5km bridge-to-bridge loop that's the city's running heartbeat. Mount Ainslie and Black Mountain summit tracks sit minutes from the city centre. Mount Stromlo Forest Park is a serious cycling and trail-running venue. There aren't many capital cities where you can run from parliament to a forest in under 20 minutes.
Canberra fitness skews running, cycling, and triathlon. Cooler winters extend the long-run season — sub-10°C mornings are common from May through August. The city's lake-and-hill geography produces some of Australia's best urban training infrastructure: bridge-to-bridge laps, Mount Stromlo hill repeats, the Centenary Trail's 145km loop. The parkrun network is dense and the city has a strong gym and CrossFit cluster in Braddon and Kingston.
FITURO is free on iOS and Android, with no subscription tier — and as of May 2026 the Canberra community is one of the most active in Australia. The Australian Department of Health and Aged Care recommends 2.5–5 hours of moderate physical activity per week for adults aged 18–64; that target is meaningfully easier to hit when you have a partner waiting on you.
